Yes, you can play pickleball on a tennis court, and it is how a huge share of players get started. A pickleball court is much smaller than a tennis court, so one fits inside with room left over, and the tennis net is close enough to the right height to play on right away.

How big is a pickleball court compared to a tennis court?
The numbers that matter:
- Pickleball court: 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, the same for singles and doubles.
- Tennis court: 36 feet wide and 78 feet long for doubles, 27 feet wide for singles.
- The kitchen: the non-volley zone runs 7 feet back from the net on each side.
So a pickleball court is a little more than half as wide and a little more than half as long as a tennis doubles court. It sits comfortably in the middle, and you do not need anything from the tennis lines except the net and a couple of reference points. The shortcut: use the tennis service line
This is the one fact that saves you ten minutes.
On a tennis court, the service line is 21 feet from the net. On a pickleball court, the baseline is 22 feet from the net. So the pickleball baseline goes one foot behind the tennis service line, on both sides.
That gives you the length for free. For the width, center the pickleball court on the tennis center service line: each pickleball sideline goes 10 feet out from the tennis center line.
How to mark a pickleball court on a tennis court
You need a tape measure, a roll of tape or some sidewalk chalk, and about ten minutes.
- Find the tennis center service line. That is the line running from the net to the service line that splits the two service boxes.
- Mark the sidelines. Measure 10 feet out from the center service line on each side and mark a line from the net back 22 feet. Do the same on the other side of the net.
- Mark the baselines. One foot behind each tennis service line, running between your two sidelines.
- Mark the kitchen lines. Seven feet from the net on each side, running between the sidelines.
- Mark the pickleball centerline. From each kitchen line back to the baseline, down the middle. On a centered layout it lines up with the tennis center service line, which you can simply use.
That is a complete doubles court. Corners do not need to be perfect for rec play, but the kitchen line does, because that is the line people will argue about.
What to use for lines
Painter's tape or vinyl court tape is the most common choice for a single session. It comes up clean from most hard courts. Avoid duct tape, which leaves residue that nobody wants to scrape off.
Sidewalk chalk works well on hard courts and washes away with the next rain. It is the most polite option on shared courts.
Rubber throw-down lines are flat strips you lay down and pick up, and they are worth it if you play on the same unmarked court every week.
Many parks now paint permanent pickleball lines on tennis courts in a contrasting color. If yours has them, use those and skip all of this.
What about the net?
A pickleball net is 34 inches at the center and 36 inches at the posts. A tennis net is 36 inches at the center and 42 inches at the posts.
So on a tennis net, the middle plays about two inches high, and the sides play higher still. Most casual games simply play on it as is, and after a few points nobody notices. But if you want the real thing:
- Lower the center strap until the middle of the net is at 34 inches. Most tennis nets have an adjustable strap in the center.
- Or bring a portable pickleball net. They set up in a few minutes and let you run more than one court at the same time.
If you are playing a real match, lowering the net matters more than perfect lines, because a high net turns every dink rally into a slightly different game.
How many pickleball courts fit on one tennis court?
One, if you use the tennis net.
Two, side by side, if you use the tennis net and are comfortable with tight spacing between them.
Four, with portable nets, using the whole fenced area. A standard fenced tennis court space is roughly 60 by 120 feet, and that usually fits four pickleball courts. This is how most converted facilities are laid out, and it is why tennis-to-pickleball conversions are so common: one tennis court becomes four pickleball courts.
Can you play on clay or grass courts?
Clay: you can, but it is not great. The plastic ball bounces low and unevenly, the surface slows everything down, and tape does not stick. Chalk is out, and throw-down lines slide.
Grass: mostly no. The ball barely bounces.
Hard courts are what the game is designed for, and most public tennis courts are hard courts anyway.
Which ball to use
Tennis courts are outdoor courts, so use an outdoor pickleball ball: the harder ball with smaller, more numerous holes. The indoor ball is lighter and gets pushed around by the wind. Outdoor balls are also usually a bright yellow-green, which is the same reason it is a bad idea to wear a shirt in that color.
Tennis court etiquette for pickleball players
Tennis and pickleball share a lot of courts, and a little care keeps it friendly.
Check the posted rules. Some courts reserve certain hours for tennis, and some ban pickleball outright. Some allow it only on marked courts.
Take your tape with you. Leaving tape on a tennis court is the fastest way to get pickleball banned from it.
Mind the noise. A paddle hitting a plastic ball is louder than a racquet, and it carries. If the courts back onto houses, avoid the earliest hours.
Do not take four courts' worth of space for one game. If other people are waiting, one pickleball court with the tennis net leaves room for them.

Can you use the tennis lines instead?
Some groups play using the tennis service boxes as the pickleball court: the service line as the baseline and the singles sideline as the sideline. It is close, but wider and a foot shorter than a real pickleball court, and there is no kitchen line. It works for a first game.
