Amazon
Good at: speed and price. Two days, often under $25.
What goes wrong: the designs. Search "funny pickleball shirt" and you will see the same eight jokes on the first three pages, sold by two dozen different storefronts. "Dink Responsibly" alone appears hundreds of times.
That is not a scandal. Most of those listings are print-on-demand using the same blank catalog and the same clipart, which is a legitimate business. But it means the shirt is not distinctive, and if you are buying a joke shirt, distinctiveness was the point.

The other thing worth knowing: a lot of Etsy pickleball listings are also print-on-demand routed through the same fulfillers as everything else, so "handmade by a small shop" often means "designed by a small shop, printed by a large one". That is fine, but it means the seller's shop size tells you nothing about the shirt.

The four things worth checking anywhere
1. Blank weight. It is usually listed in ounces. Under 4.5 oz is a light tee that will feel thin. Around 6 oz is a substantial shirt. Ours is 6.1 oz ring-spun cotton, garment-dyed.
2. Whether the size chart has measurements. A chart that only says S/M/L is not a size chart. You want chest width and body length in inches, because a "large" varies enormously between blanks.

4. Whether the photo is a mockup. Most print-on-demand photos are digital renders of the art placed on a blank. That is standard and not deceptive, but it means the print position in the photo is an approximation. If the art looks suspiciously perfect and centered, it is a render.
On returns
Worth reading before you buy anywhere in this category.
Print-on-demand shirts are made for your order, which means most shops in this space, including us, do not take returns for sizing or change of mind. There is no inventory to return them to.
We cover damage and printing defects. We are explicit that we do not do size returns, because the alternative is pretending otherwise and then arguing about it later.

At the low end, three things are different. The blank is lighter, usually around 4.2 oz, which is thinner fabric with a looser knit. The print is smaller and uses fewer passes, which means less ink and faster production. And the design is almost certainly licensed stock art or a common phrase set in a common font, because original design costs money to make and cannot be spread across a hundred sellers.
None of those are scams. They are the honest consequences of selling at that price, and for plenty of purchases they are the right trade. A shirt for a one-off tournament weekend does not need to survive fifty washes.
Where it matters is the gift. A thin shirt feels thin in the hand immediately, before the joke has landed, and that impression is hard to reverse.
A word on personalization

Marketplaces handle small runs of custom text badly. The listings exist, but the process is usually a text box, no proof, and no recourse if the spelling comes back wrong.
What to look for instead: a shop that confirms the exact text with you before printing. It sounds like a small thing and it is the difference between eight correct shirts and eight shirts with a misplaced apostrophe on them forever.
