Is There a Pickleball Dress Code? Clubs, Tournaments, Men and Women

By José Cabrera · October 2, 2026 · 7 min read

Public pickleball courts rarely have a dress code beyond wearing a shirt and shoes. Private clubs and indoor facilities usually require court shoes with non-marking soles, athletic clothing and a shirt at all times, and some country clubs still ask for mostly white. Tournaments can ask you to change offensive clothing or a shirt close to the ball's color.

Shirts that pass every club dress code

Most players never think about a pickleball dress code, because at most public courts there is not one. Show up in a shirt and athletic shoes and you are dressed correctly.

But as soon as you play indoors, at a private club or in a tournament, rules start to appear, and a few of them catch people by surprise. Here is what is usually required, where, and what men and women actually wear.

Public courts: almost no rules

At a park or a public recreation center, the practical dress code is:

  • Wear a shirt. Most parks and rec centers require one.
  • Wear athletic shoes. Not sandals, not flip-flops.
  • No swimwear at courts near pools or beaches, in most places.

That is usually it. Beyond that, what you wear is up to you, and the regulars will be wearing everything from tennis skirts to cargo shorts.

Indoor facilities: the shoe rule

The rule that surprises people most is about shoes. Many indoor gyms, rec centers and dedicated pickleball facilities require non-marking soles. Dark rubber soles, common on running shoes, leave black scuffs on gym floors, and staff will ask you to change or leave.

What to wear indoors:

  • Court shoes with non-marking soles, often labeled as such
  • Athletic clothing, since indoor gyms get warm fast
  • A shirt at all times

Court shoes are also the single best purchase for playing outdoors, for different reasons: side-to-side support. The whole argument is in our guide to court shoes.

Private clubs and country clubs

Clubs vary the most. Common rules include:

Athletic apparel only. No jeans, denim shorts or street clothes on court.

Proper court shoes. Often non-marking, even outdoors, to protect court surfaces.

Collared shirts at some clubs. Clubs with a tennis heritage often carry their tennis rules over to pickleball, which can mean collared shirts for men and no cotton t-shirts on court. Newer pickleball-first clubs usually accept a regular t-shirt. If you are a guest, ask before you go.

Mostly white at a few traditional clubs. Some clubs with a tennis heritage apply a "predominantly white" rule to pickleball too. It is rare, but if you are visiting a country club as a guest, ask.

No offensive graphics. A shirt with profanity or crude jokes can get you asked to change at almost any private facility.

The safe approach for a first visit: athletic shorts or a skort, a plain or tastefully graphic shirt, and court shoes. Then look at what the regulars wear.

Tournament dress code

Tournaments are the one place where clothing rules are written down and enforced by someone with authority. Specific rules vary by event, but the common ones are:

  • Athletic clothing and court shoes.
  • No offensive or profane graphics. Referees and tournament directors can require a change.
  • Clothing that does not blend with the ball. A shirt in the same optic yellow as the ball can be a problem, because it makes the ball harder to track against your body. Referees may ask you to change.
  • Matching colors for doubles teams at some events, mostly higher-level or team competitions.

Always check the event's own rules, which are usually in the confirmation email or on the registration page. If in doubt, bring a spare shirt in a neutral color, and make sure your partner knows if the event expects matching colors. The rest of the day, from spare socks to what to eat between matches, is in the tournament bag checklist.

Pickleball dress code for men

What most men actually wear at the courts:

  • Athletic shorts with pockets for the second ball, usually a 7 to 9 inch inseam
  • A t-shirt or athletic shirt, often with a joke on it
  • Court shoes
  • A hat or visor outdoors

Nothing about it is complicated. The main mistake men make is running shoes, and the second is a shirt in the exact color of the ball. The full men's version is in pickleball outfits for men.

Pickleball dress code for women

What most women actually wear:

  • A skort, shorts or leggings, ideally with a ball pocket
  • A t-shirt, tank or athletic top
  • A supportive sports bra
  • Court shoes
  • A visor or hat outdoors

Pickleball dresses with built-in shorts have become popular too, and they are fine under any dress code that allows athletic wear. The full women's guide is in what women wear to play, and there is a version for women over 50 with more on coverage and sun.

Pickleball party dress code

Pickleball-themed parties and socials usually come with a playful dress code. Popular themes:

  • All white, like a classic tennis club
  • Retro tennis, headbands and wristbands included
  • Neon, especially for evening or glow-ball events
  • Matching team shirts, with the group or club name printed on them

Whatever the theme, wear clothes you can play in and court shoes if there will be real games. For matching shirts, any design in the shop can be printed with a team or club name through Leagues & Teams, with no minimum order.

Your first visit somewhere new: a checklist

The easiest way to avoid any dress code problem is to pack for the strictest version of the place you are going.

  • Court shoes with non-marking soles. They work indoors and outdoors, at every level.
  • Two shirts. One plain or with a clean graphic, one spare. The spare covers a sweaty drive home, a white-leaning club, or a tournament referee who dislikes your yellow shirt.
  • Athletic shorts or a skort with a pocket. No denim, no street shorts.
  • A hat or visor for outdoor courts.
  • A light layer for early mornings and cold indoor gyms.

Then spend the first five minutes looking at what the regulars wear. Every club has an unwritten norm that is stricter or looser than the rules on the wall, and matching it is the fastest way to fit in. If you are nervous about the social side of a new group more than the outfit, how open play works for newcomers covers the unwritten rules too, from paddle stacking to how to ask for a game without feeling awkward about it.

What gets you asked to change

In rough order of how often it happens:

  1. Marking shoes indoors
  2. Offensive graphics at clubs and tournaments
  3. No shirt, even on hot days
  4. Swimwear or street clothes at private facilities
  5. A shirt that matches the ball in tournaments

What is always fine

A comfortable t-shirt, athletic shorts or a skort, court shoes and a hat. That combination fits the dress code at nearly every public court and most clubs and tournaments. If the shirt has a joke on it, keep it clean enough for a family barbecue and it will pass anywhere.

The short version

Public courts: a shirt and athletic shoes. Indoor facilities: non-marking court shoes. Clubs: athletic apparel, sometimes collars or white, never offensive graphics. Tournaments: check the rules, avoid ball-colored shirts, bring a spare. Everywhere: court shoes and a shirt you are comfortable in. If it is also a shirt that makes the group laugh, the collection for people who planned their life around court time keeps the jokes clean enough for any club.

Common questions

Is there a dress code for pickleball?
Not at most public courts, beyond wearing a shirt and athletic shoes. Private clubs, indoor facilities and tournaments often have their own rules, usually about shoes, shirts and offensive graphics.
What shoes are required for indoor pickleball?
Court shoes with non-marking soles. Black-soled running shoes leave scuffs on indoor floors, and many gyms and indoor facilities do not allow them.
Can you wear a t-shirt to play pickleball?
Yes. A regular t-shirt is standard at public courts and most clubs. Some country clubs require collared or mostly white shirts, so check before your first visit.
What is the dress code for a pickleball tournament?
Tournaments usually require athletic clothing and court shoes, prohibit offensive graphics, and can ask a player to change a shirt that is distracting or close to the ball's color. Check the specific event's rules.
What should you wear to a pickleball-themed party?
Athletic clothes you can actually play in, often with a theme like all white, retro tennis, neon or matching team shirts. Court shoes if there will be real games.
