Pickleball Outfits for Women (What People Actually Wear to Open Play)

By José Cabrera · September 9, 2026 · 7 min read

Most women play in a skort or athletic shorts, a breathable shirt, and court shoes. The skort wins because it has built-in shorts and usually a pocket for a spare ball. There is no dress code at a public court, so only two choices matter: court shoes instead of running shoes, and nothing yellow.

Search for what to wear and you get a hundred pages of skort photography, all of it published by companies that sell skorts. The clothes are fine. The problem is that none of those pages tell you what the court is actually like, which is the part you want to know before you walk onto one for the first time.

So this is the version from the court instead of the catalog.

What do women actually wear to play pickleball?

At a public court on a weekday morning, the honest answer is: a mix. You will see skorts, you will see running shorts from 2014, you will see leggings, and you will see one woman in full matching kit who is either very serious or very new. All of them are playing the same game.

The most common setup is a skort, a breathable shirt, and court shoes. A skort is popular for a practical reason and not a fashion one: it has real shorts built in underneath, so you can lunge for a ball at the net without thinking about it, and most of them have a pocket.

That pocket matters more than the rest of the outfit. Which brings us to the thing nobody warns you about.

Where do you put the extra ball?

In doubles, the server usually holds a second ball so play does not stop every time one rolls away. If your bottoms have no pockets, you are holding it in your non-paddle hand for the entire point, or you are setting it down and walking back for it, or you are tucking it into your waistband and hoping.

This is the single most useful thing to check before you buy anything: does it have a pocket that closes. A lot of women's athletic wear does not, and a lot of the pockets that exist are too shallow to hold a ball through a lunge. Men's shorts almost always have them, which is why nobody writes about this.

If you love a skort that has no pocket, the fix is a wristband with a small pocket, or just accepting that you will be the person who plays with a ball in her hand.

Skort, shorts, or leggings?

All three are normal. The choice is about temperature and what you want to think about while playing.

A skort is the default for a reason. Built-in shorts, usually a pocket, and enough coverage that you are not adjusting anything when you reach low. If you are buying one thing, buy this.

Athletic shorts work exactly as well and cost less if you already own them. Look for a five to seven inch inseam. Very short running shorts ride up during lateral movement, which pickleball has a lot of.

Leggings are the standard indoors and in cold weather. In August heat they hold warmth against your legs and most players switch. Below sixty degrees they are better than anything else.

There is no version of this where the wrong choice costs you a point. Pick by comfort and move on. If you are still deciding what else you need, the full rundown of what to wear covers the pieces that apply to everybody.

What kind of shirt should you wear?

A breathable shirt with sleeves you can move in. That is the whole requirement.

The real decision is fabric, and it depends entirely on how hard you are playing. Synthetic performance fabric moves sweat off your skin, which is what you want for three competitive games in real heat. Cotton does not, and in August it will hold everything you sweat into it.

For everything else, and everything else is most of the hours anybody spends around this sport, cotton is more comfortable and looks like normal clothing. Warming up, a casual round of open play, driving over, standing around afterwards. That is where a cotton shirt belongs, and pretending otherwise is how you end up with a drawer of performance apparel you only wear to the gym.

One rule that is not about comfort: do not wear yellow or yellow-green on an outdoor court. Outdoor pickleballs are optic yellow, and a top in that shade makes the ball hard for the other team to pick up against your body. It is the only clothing choice in this sport that genuinely affects play, and it is why nothing in our collection is yellow.

Do you need a special sports bra?

You need a supportive one. You probably do not need a new one.

Pickleball is lateral: short bursts, sudden stops, a lot of reaching and very little sustained bouncing. It is closer to tennis than to running. For most players a medium-impact bra handles it, and whatever you already wear for a workout class will be fine for your first month.

If you play often and want one thing to upgrade, upgrade the shoes first. Which is the only piece of gear here that is not optional.

Why do people keep telling you to buy court shoes?

Because running shoes are built to move you forward and pickleball moves you sideways.

A running shoe has a soft, tall, cushioned heel designed to absorb impact in one direction. Push off it hard to the left and your foot rolls over the edge of the sole. Court shoes have a flatter, wider base and reinforcement on the sides for exactly that movement. Tennis shoes work perfectly well; they are the same construction.

You do not need them for your first session. You need them if you are still playing in a month. It is the one purchase where the money is doing something other than making you look like a player.

What should you skip until you know you are staying?

Almost everything.

Skip the matching set. Skip the paddle upgrade, because the starter paddle is not what is losing you points and the four things that actually are have nothing to do with equipment. Skip the branded visor. Skip anything you saw in an ad while researching what to wear.

Bring water, sunglasses if it is bright, and clothes you can move in. Everything else can wait until you know whether this is a hobby or a Tuesday.

What nobody mentions about the sun

Outdoor open play runs long. You will be on an uncovered court for two hours, standing still between points, in the middle of the day, and you will not notice it happening because you are having fun.

A hat or visor is worth more than any other accessory in this sport. Long sleeves in a light fabric are underrated for the same reason, and plenty of regulars wear them in real heat specifically to stay covered. Sunscreen on the back of your neck, which is the spot everybody misses and the spot that faces up every time you look down for a ball.

This is the advice you get from the woman who has been playing at that court for three years, usually about ten minutes after you should have heard it.

The short version

Wear athletic clothes you already own. Check for a pocket. Get court shoes if you come back. Avoid yellow. Wear a hat.

Everything past that is preference, and at open play the person you are about to partner with has not looked at your outfit once. They are looking at whether you call the score out loud, which is a much bigger part of fitting in than anything you have on. If it is your first time and the social part is what you are actually nervous about, that has its own guide.

Common questions

What do women wear to play pickleball?
A skort or athletic shorts, a breathable top, and court shoes. Skorts are the most common bottom because they have built-in shorts underneath and often a pocket. Leggings are common indoors and in cold weather.
Do you have to wear a skirt to play pickleball?
No. Skorts are popular but nothing requires them. Athletic shorts, leggings, and joggers are all normal at open play, and nobody is looking at your outfit anyway.
Can you wear leggings to play pickleball?
Yes. Leggings are very common indoors and anywhere below about 60 degrees. In summer heat most players switch to a skort or shorts, because leggings hold warmth against your legs.
What should a woman wear to pickleball for the first time?
Whatever athletic clothes you already own, plus the flattest shoes you have. Do not buy an outfit before your first session. If you decide you are coming back, buy court shoes first and everything else later.
Do you need a special sports bra for pickleball?
Not a special one, but a supportive one helps. Pickleball is mostly lateral movement with sudden stops rather than sustained bouncing, so a medium-impact bra is usually enough for most players.
What color should women not wear to play pickleball?
Yellow and yellow-green. Outdoor pickleballs are optic yellow, and a top in the same shade makes the ball genuinely hard for the other team to track against you.
