Pickleball Outfits: What People Actually Wear

There is no pickleball dress code in recreational play. Wear something you can move and sweat in: a shirt that is not heavy cotton if it is hot, shorts or a skirt you already own, and court shoes rather than running shoes. The shoes are the only part that changes anything.

The only piece of kit that matters

Everything above the waist is preference. Below it is physics.

Running shoes are built for forward motion, with a raised heel, a soft midsole and almost no support at the sides. Pickleball is a lateral game on a small court with sudden changes of direction. The rolled ankle is the most common injury in the sport and it comes almost entirely from playing in the wrong shoes.

Court shoes have a flat, wide base and reinforcement on the sides. That is the whole difference, and it is worth more than any shirt on this page.

Cotton or polyester, settled

Neither is wrong. They solve different problems, and most of the arguments online are people answering a different question than the one being asked.

Polyester does not absorb much water, so sweat travels through it and evaporates. Over three hours outdoors in summer that is a real advantage, and cotton in the same conditions becomes a wet towel by the second game.

Cotton absorbs, which is bad while playing and pleasant afterwards. Heavier cotton in particular hangs better and survives washing, which is why graphic shirts use it and technical shirts do not. If the shirt is meant to be worn after the game as well as during it, cotton wins.

Common questions

Is there a dress code for pickleball?
Not in recreational play. Some private clubs and tournaments ask for collared shirts or have rules about covering up, but public courts and open play have no requirements at all.
What should you not wear to play pickleball?
Running shoes, because they have no lateral support. Beyond that, avoid yellow, since the ball is yellow and a yellow shirt makes it fractionally harder for your opponent to track.
Do you need special clothes for pickleball?
No. Anything you can move in works. The only piece of equipment that genuinely changes the game is footwear, and the rest is comfort and preference.
What do women wear to play pickleball?
Most wear a tennis skirt or athletic shorts with a relaxed top, or leggings when it is cold. There is no convention, and the sport never developed one.
