Pickleball Shirts for Women (Why Most of Them Are Sized Wrong)
By José Cabrera · September 17, 2026 · 7 min read
Most women's pickleball shirts are either a shrunk-down men's cut or a fitted athletic top sized optimistically. Look for a chart with chest and length in inches rather than just letters, buy the relaxed cut, and size up if you are between two. The joke matters less than the fit if the shirt never gets worn.
Relaxed cut, real measurements, jokes that are not about being bad at it
See all →Women buy most of the funny pickleball shirts sold in this country, and in return the category hands them the worst version of the product.
That is not a complaint about anyone's intentions. It is a manufacturing reality, and knowing it makes the shirt you buy fit.
The two things that go wrong
One: it is a men's shirt, scaled down.
A large share of graphic shirts are printed on unisex blanks, which means the pattern was drafted on a men's block and then made smaller. The proportions do not change, only the numbers. The result is a shirt that is wide where it should be narrow and short where it should be long.
Two: it is a fitted athletic top, sized optimistically.
The other common failure. A women's-cut technical shirt sized so a medium is genuinely a small. Anyone who buys athletic wear online knows this pattern. Buying it as a gift is a coin flip with bad odds.
Between those two, an enormous number of women's pickleball shirts arrive and never get worn a second time.
What to look for instead
A size chart with inches. This is the single highest-value thing on any product page. A chart that says S/M/L is not a chart. You want chest width and body length in inches, so you can measure a shirt you already own and compare.
If a listing does not publish measurements, the seller does not know them either, because they are selling someone else's blank.
Relaxed cut as the default. Especially for a graphic shirt intended to be worn off the court. Relaxed works on more bodies, in more weather, for more of the day. Fitted is a real preference and a bad guess.
Heavier cotton. Around 6 oz rather than 4.2 oz. Thin shirts go transparent when damp, which is a specific problem nobody mentions in listings. Ours are 6.1 oz ring-spun cotton, garment-dyed, cut relaxed, S through 3XL, and the collection for people here for the social half is the easiest place to start.
A color that already exists in her closet. Neon is court-only, and court-only gets worn two hours a week.
Size up if you are between two
This is worth stating plainly because it is the fix for most of the above.
Nobody has ever been annoyed that a shirt was slightly roomy. The opposite complaint is permanent and ends with the shirt folded in a drawer. If the measurements put her between a medium and a large, buy the large.
For a gift this matters double, because there is no graceful way to ask, and because most print-on-demand shops including ours do not take returns for sizing. There is no stock to return it to. We are explicit about that rather than discovering it together later.
The jokes that work
The tone advice here is different from the men's version, and the difference is real rather than decorative.
What works:
- Obsession. The schedule, the group chat, the number of times a week. Universally true and self-aware.
- The social side. Playing for the coffee afterwards. Nobody is insulted.
- Doubles partners. Jokes about the partnership, especially if she plays with a spouse. Keep it about the pair rather than about either player: a joke aimed at one of them gets read by both.
- Winning. Especially against people who assumed otherwise.
What does not:
- Anything about being bad, unless she says it first. This is the same rule we apply everywhere and it is the most common gift mistake in the category.
- Skill ratings. A number is a joke a person makes about herself.
- Anything that needs explaining to people who do not play.
Our tour of the sayings themselves sorts the catalog by how smug it sounds, which is the most useful axis when you are trying to match a joke to a person.
Cotton or polyester
Long outdoor sessions in heat: polyester, because cotton becomes a wet towel by the second game.
Everything else, and anything meant to be worn after playing: cotton.
They are genuinely different products that share a name, which we unpacked in the piece on what the term covers.
The rest of the outfit
The shirt is the part people ask about and the least consequential part of what you wear.
Shoes are the piece that matters, because running shoes are built for forward motion and pickleball is lateral. The rolled ankle is the most common injury in the sport and it comes almost entirely from footwear. The piece on footwear covers it.
For the full outfit question, including the skirt-versus-shorts argument and what works in heat, what women actually wear to play pickleball is the longer piece.
If this is a gift
Measure something she already wears, size up if between, choose relaxed, and pick a joke she has made out loud.
Our main guide to buying for a player and what to buy her specifically cover what to buy when a shirt is not the right call.
The yellow problem
A small rule with a real reason: avoid yellow.
The ball is yellow. A yellow shirt makes the ball fractionally harder for your opponent to track against you, which sounds like an advantage and is actually just an annoyance that people notice. It is also the color most likely to appear in novelty pickleball designs, which is why it comes up.
Everything else is open. The useful filter is whether the color already appears in her closet, because a color she already wears becomes a shirt she already reaches for.
Why the men's and women's advice differs
It would be neater if the guidance were identical, and it is not, for one concrete reason.
The graphic shirt market is built on unisex blanks. That means the default product was drafted for a men's body and everything else is an adjustment. Men buying in this category get a garment designed for them by default; women get an adaptation.
That is the whole source of the fit problem, and it is why the advice for women leans so hard on measurements. When the default fits you, letters are good enough. When it does not, inches are the only reliable information on the page.
The second difference is the joke itself. The self-deprecating register that dominates funny sports apparel was largely written for and by men, and a lot of it lands differently coming from a woman who is used to being underestimated on a court. Jokes about winning tend to work better than jokes about losing, and that is worth knowing before you pick.
None of this is a complaint about the products. It is a description of how they are made, and knowing it is what lets you buy one that gets worn.
How to measure a shirt you already own
Since every piece of advice here depends on it, the actual method takes thirty seconds.
Lay the shirt flat, buttoned or zipped if it has anything, with the front smooth and no bunching at the sides.
Chest: measure straight across from one underarm seam to the other. That number is half the circumference, which is how nearly every apparel chart lists it. Do not double it and do not compare it to a body measurement.
Length: from the highest point of the shoulder straight down to the hem.
Write both numbers down and compare them to the chart on whatever you are buying. If the shirt you measured is one you love the fit of, you are now buying a known quantity instead of a guess, which is the entire problem this article exists to solve.
The one-line version
Fit fails more of these shirts than the joke does. Find a chart in inches, choose relaxed, and go up a size when you are guessing.
Common questions
- How should a women's pickleball shirt fit?
- Relaxed enough to move and to sit in afterwards. Fitted athletic cuts are a personal preference and a bad default, especially as a gift.
- Why do women's pickleball shirt sizes run small?
- Many are fitted cuts sized optimistically, and many are simply men's blanks scaled down. Neither is a reliable guide, which is why inch measurements matter.
- Should women buy the unisex or the women's cut pickleball shirt?
- Unisex relaxed is the safer default for a graphic shirt meant to be worn off the court. A women's fitted cut makes sense for playing in heat if she has chosen the fit herself.
- What jokes work on a women's pickleball shirt?
- Jokes about obsession, the social side and doubles partners. Jokes about being bad only work if she has already made them herself.
- What size should I buy if I am between two?
- The larger one. Roomy is never the complaint, and a shirt that is slightly tight stops being worn entirely.
